A recent meta-analysis suggested that ever breastfeeding and breastfeeding for longer corresponded with a decreased risk of developing epithelial ovarian cancer. 10
A study which included over 50'000 women with breast cancer and nearly 100'000 women without found that the relative risk of breast cancer in parous women is reduced by 4.3% for every 12 months she breastfeeds. Furthermore, a review of 32 studies concluded that the risk of having breast cancer was 14% lower among parous women who had ever breastfed compared to women who had never.12,13
Unfolding evidence suggests that the relationship between breastfeeding and postpartum depression is bidirectional, meaning that while postpartum depression rates may reduce breastfeeding rates, not engaging in breastfeeding may increase the risk of depression.
